Vietnamese communist leader keeps close ties with Beijing while purging his opponents

Trong’s time was the time when China poked its hand into the Communist Party of Vietnam most deeply

During the time of purging the “treason” group, Vietnamese communist leader Nguyen Phu Trong kept close contact with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

Discovering the “treason” group was a great achievement of the China Intelligence, and part of it, General Secretary Trong of the ruling Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) assigned the “Chinese unit” to handle it, led to dire results. This is a very straightforward way of handling, China’s purpose is to remind those inside the CPV that they have penetrated very deeply into the party, and they are the masters of the game, not the General Intelligence Department of Vietnam’s Ministry of Defense (ie General Department II).

In the past 10 years, many Vietnamese officials have died unexpectedly, which shows that Vietnam is being squeezed into the arms of the “golden friend” of China. It was only before and after the 12th CPV’s National Congress that China intervened deeply, because Trong wanted to consolidate power within his party.

In March 2017, a video clip of nearly 30 minutes appeared on social networks, recording a very powerful speech by Major General Truong Giang Long, Deputy Director General of the General Political Department of the Police Forces, cum Director of the Academy of Politics, the People’s Police. The context of the speech was in October 2016, after Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong discovered the group “treasonable” thanks to Chinese intelligence.

In that clip, Truong Giang Long said:

We say to the comrades: The bad guys (Chinese spies) were planted in high-ranking positions. In the past, only a few spies were planted but now, I inform you comrades that they are hundreds. And if we don’t detect them and don’t take them seriously, I would like to tell you that, at the beginning of the year, during the summary of the National Security Protection Conference, our key cadres, heard from senior leaders of the police forces, informed us that we are monitoring, are grasping very firmly, very closely the developments of political opportunistic elements that are plotting to overthrow our regime and collude with outsiders. These elements fuel riots, political hot spots, which we, comrades, cannot belittle and take lightly.

After this clip was released, Truong Giang Long was put into early retirement, in 2017. Truong Giang Long’s words were true, he did not imply that Chinese spies are planted in high-ranking level but only mentioned grassroots organizations. However, this statement can also make Mr. Trong feel “ticky” so Truong Giang Long had to retire. And since then, no one has dared to say anything about this. Now, insiders can only secretly leak information to free newspapers to speak for them.

Nguyen Phu Trong’s victory over the “treason” group had to pay a heavy price for the country. The CPV is deeply interfered and controlled by outside forces. It is known that in the period from the 12th National Congress in early 2016, to the time of completely defeating the “treason” group, there were 4 exchanges between the two sides.

Specifically, the first time was on January 29, 2016, Mr. Xi Jinping sent his envoy to meet Nguyen Phu Trong; the second time was on February 29, 2016, Nguyen Phu Trong sent his envoy to meet Xi Jinping; the third time was on October 30, 2017, Mr. Xi Jinping sent an envoy to meet Nguyen Phu Trong; and for the fourth time on November 1, 2017, Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong sent an envoy to China.

After Nguyen Phu Trong finished “weeding,” the exchange of envoys was no longer necessary, because within the CPV, no other “treason” group had emerged so far. If Nguyen Phu Trong relinquishes power, it is certain that the deep dependence on China is still there and Vietnam cannot be escaped from China’s influence.
